Task Episode 6 Ending Explained: Robbie's Death & Hidden Money Twist | Tom Pelphrey Interview (2025)

Spoiler Alert: Buckle up, because the ending of Task Episode 6 is a rollercoaster of emotions! This episode, titled “Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a river,” throws some of the show's most beloved characters into a whirlwind of violence and heartbreak. But, amidst the chaos, a glimmer of hope emerges. Could Robbie Prendergrast have actually won? Let's dive in! (Warning: Spoilers ahead for those who haven't watched the episode on HBO MAX!)**

Early in the episode, Robbie and Tom Brandis find themselves in a fierce battle against Jayson, Perry, and the rest of the Dark Hearts. Characters are shot, stabbed, and everything in between. During the fight, Robbie makes a bold move, tossing a duffle bag full of drug money into a raging river while yelling at Jayson. This leads to a brutal fight between Robbie and Jayson. It seems Robbie might finally get retribution for his brother’s murder. But then, a bloody knife appears, and Robbie is down.

But here's where it gets controversial... Robbie dies. Perry and Jayson eventually track down the bag of cash in the river, while Grasso tries to save Lizzie, but she is killed. So how does this end on a positive note?

Because the money wasn't in the bag! It was on its way to Maeve. This twist makes you wonder: How early did Robbie plan this? How did Task turn Episode 6 around with one glorious final shot?

It turns out, Robbie orchestrated the entire thing. He lured the Dark Hearts to the cabin as a distraction. He teamed up with Shelley, who sold the drugs and split the money into two bags. One for her, and one for Maeve.

So, the episode ends with Jayson and Perry realizing they've been fooled, Maeve rolling in dough, and a single shot of a happy Robbie swimming in the quarry. Robbie won.

But when did Robbie come up with this master plan? According to Tom Pelphrey, the actor who plays Robbie, the character's turning point was when he realized his plan was shaky and might need a Plan B. Pelphrey noted that the final shot of Robbie in the quarry was added in post-production, a decision by showrunner Brad Ingelsby to give the episode a sense of completion.

And this is the part most people miss... The final shot of Robbie swimming in the quarry was not in the script. Ingelsby added it to give the episode a bittersweet ending.

With one episode left, the Dark Hearts are still after their money, and there are still loose ends to tie up.
